Which character from any film, television show, or book would you most like to take on a date and why?

This relates beautifully to something about which I've been meaning to rant. )

I already have my ticket for This Is It and I'm going tomorrow at 7:00. I am going to be dancing, singing and crying in my seat. I will be a delight to sit next to. But really, I wanted to see that tour so bad. :( Last night we were choosing our ten desert-island songs--this is what we do in mi casa at 1:00 AM, and it's the hardest thing ever; I'm still trying to finalize my list--and, agreeing that we'd probably be on the same island and shouldn't overlap, I chose "Billie Jean" and David chose "Thriller." Sometimes he has that as his wake-up ringtone, so I'm sitting here eating cereal and it's "DARKNESS FALLS THROUGHOUT THE LAND...THE MIDNIGHT HOUR IS CLOSE AT HAND!" Love it. (Halloween, yay!) ♥

Oh, you know I have to.

The Office 6x04 and Supernatural 5x05. )

David and I spent fifteen raucous minutes last night teaching one another to say obscene things in French and American Sign Language--he was lamenting his busy weekend at the same time that I stumbled across Vie de Merde (French FML), and I explained "ma vie c'est de la merde," and that devolved into "bitches ain't shit, son" ("les salopes ne sont que de la merde, mon mec"? Something like that) and other such useful phrases. At this point we actually make strangers on the street laugh with our banter. Really. And I wrote a story for my Creative Writing class that involved a mysterious, other-worldly figure, and one of my peer reviewers said she wasn't sure if it was supposed to be God, the Devil or Santa. I LOVE that they're interchangeable. (I may post it once it's been edited.) So it's been an entertaining week.

Hmmph. I thought SVU was premiering last night. Apparently it's moved to Wednesdays. No one tells me these things. That means in conflicts with Glee, and I don't know, I think Glee is gonna win that one. The other has gotten very silly. I'll probably still download, but...eh. I've kinda lost interest in DH as well. And kinda Heroes. I'm losing my touch. (My mother's texting me that I need to watch Mercy, because apparently it's offensive. "YU MUST WATCH." Good grief.)

DAY SIX:
"Learn how to love art in yourselves, not yourselves in art. If you undertake to exploit art, it will betray you; art is very vindictive. I repeat: love art in yourselves, not yourselves in art--that should be your guiding thread. The theatre does not exist for you, you exist for the theatre." -- Constantin Stanislavski

I just finished reading this book of his writings and speeches; I have a lot of high-minded ideas about the integrity of art in all forms; I think the ego of the creator (writer, actor, director, whatever) should come second to the work itself. If you're going to create art, you should do it because you want it to exist and be out there in the world, not because you yourself want the attention. (If you can get joy out of it as well, that's pretty good. But that's not the only reason to do it.) [/pretentious]

[Two other, less famous quotes I loved from this past week:
- "So much hotness. I need to see this movie again. Alone. Pee Wee Herman style." -- [info]killervee, in reaction to an Inglourious Basterds cast picspam
- "This is why kids today are pansies. They didn't have terrifying movies with electro-shock therapy and screaming bodiless heads." -- inversed @ Snarkfest, on Return to Oz]

P.S.--My Halloween plans have changed, and I need ideas. Anything Disney. Thoughts?

Not a bad day. My French class was canceled and my short story was peer-reviewed in Creative Writing, and everyone said they really liked one of my characters and thought the whole thing was funny (which was sort of the point). Several people thought my unspecified narrator had a crush on the second character--I wrote them both as guys; I hadn't expected people to be slashing my fictional characters until at least 15 years from now when I'm rich and famous and published, but it's never too soon to start!

DAY FIVE:

I was planning to post a particularly funny interview with Johnny or one of my favorite trailers or something, but then I came across this video from 2005 in which Obama, amongst others, roasts Rahm Emanuel, whom I totally love, and it is EXCELLENT. The best quote, if you don't have time to watch (starts around 5:02): "It hasn't been easy for Rahm, though. As a young man he had a serious accident. I think many of you are aware of this--he was working at a deli, [and had an] accident with a meat-slicing machine and he lost part of his middle finger. As a result of this, this rendered him practically mute." HEEEEE.

Well, of course the Emmys pissed me off. Hugh and Steve are becoming Susan Luccis. GAH. But the Cheno won, which I reallyreally wanted but didn't necessarily expect, because no one appreciates PD, and her speech was completely adorable. She should be on TO! She can be Angela's sister! The one she hasn't talked to in 16 years or whatever! Come on, it's perfect, she's tiny and blond! And Michael Emerson was wonderful, as always. He absolutely deserved it. ♥ And "Lost" needs to SWEEP next year, LotR-style, or else. I spent the night AIM-chatting with the ONTD crowd, and it was, of course, priceless and shouty and faster than my brain processes language. But in a good way ("OK, THAT'S IT, I'M GOING TO PUNCH EVERYONE EVER").

DAY FOUR: The Movie Spoiler: totally addictive website that basically spoils/recaps movies, both recent and older. They're user-submitted, so some are better than others, but it's useful if you're only semi-interested in a movie, or if you're weird like me and like to read recaps of things you've seen (like I do on TWoP as well).

House 6x01 )

I didn't see TBBT or Heroes yet; I'm watching the premiere of the latter tomorrow and if it's not great, I think I'm just dropping it for good. Hotness can only carry it so long. The finale was just uber-fail and the scripts have gotten awful and...gah. ONE MORE CHANCE, SHOW.

Congratulations to go my girl [info]la_belle_ange: today she broke her previous record and saw Inglourious Basterds for an eighth time. Yes, that's right. I am very impressed. As my record is four times, I am slightly abashed and need to catch up. I'm thinking maybe Alice...? Not sure.

DAY ONE: Use Somebody - Paramore (Kings of Leon cover). Great song, great cover--I really love her voice. I was disinclined to like them because they're all Twilight-y, but once again, I've given in. (Incidentally: the latest New Moon trailer? Uh, wow. It looks like a legit movie this time. I will never stop being a lolfan, but at least there are, like, actual special effects and costumes and sets/locations and stuff this time. Shoot. I've already made plans to see it with a friend opening weekend. I am still wearing my "Support Cedric Diggory" t-shirt. You have to commit to these things.)

1. Went to the pizza place from last summer to beg for my job back, and they gave me a succinct "we'll call you." They're just not that into me. Shockingly, I can't really find anything else, so far. I've been checking Craigslist obsessively, but as I'm not a welder nor someone willing to donate my eggs for money, my choices are slim. Sigh.

2. Have started watching "Rome" and am six episodes in. Atia of the Julii is rivaling both Vanessa Fisk and Eloise Hawking as the most appalling fictional mother of all time. I'm loving young!Octavian, though, as well as the Vorenus/Pullo bromance, of course. And the costumes are fabulous. And KMcK's little accent-slips make me squee.

3. Also watched the premiere of "Glee" and was glad to be home alone so I could cheerfully sing along to show tunes and REO Speedwagon and Journey. I SO wish it was a summer show, since I haven't got one of those since they canceled "Last Comic Standing" (NOOOO! WHY?!), and I have way too many fall shows. But it's got that great blend of corniness and political incorrectness that I love so much. Dare I say that Lea Michele is the Idina for the next generation? I think maybe.

4. Going to the beach this weekend, hooray! It's lovely to be back in a land where it gets above 60°F, ever.

5. 10 days until [info]la_belle_ange and I are reunited for some Trekkian goodness! ♥

Lazy Saturday. I have tons of reading to do, so of course I'm t00bing around on Lostpedia and watching old mobisodes, finally. (I so used to ship Michael/Sun. You know, back when Jin was a jackass and not a totally sweetheart/DILF badass.) I usually don't like shows that require homework--I just kinda want to watch and that's it--but "Lost" is the exception. It's so worth it.

And on that note, brief thoughts on 'The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham.' )

Next Friday I am leaving for Cornwall at 7:30 AM, and we're going to Stonehenge and stuff--which means I cannot see Watchmen opening day. D: D: I am a sad panda. The trip sounds like it'll be awesome, but still. The irony's killing me: Stonehenge is rather old. IT WILL STILL BE THERE ON SATURDAY. There's really no rush. I think we're shooting the movie on for Sunday night, anyway.

And I have a project and I need help: I'm assembling a list of uploads of the Best Original Song nominees 1998-2008, and I already have a bunch, but I need a few more. Yaaaay, got 'em all!

Awesome week is so far awesome:

SUNDAY
- Circus leaked and ONTD freaked the hell out, predictably, dubbing the incident "Britmas '08." :D And the CD itself is slammin'--she does a Joker laugh in "If U Seek Amy"! ("Can somebody take me home / ha ha hee hee ha ha ho!")
- "Desperate Housewives" was bananas; Creepy Dave is awesome (HAI, [info]eco49rvra!)

MONDAY
- More or less pwned my Old English translation test, the one that counts for 25% of my grade
- Finished early, went to Starbucks, came back and watched a clip from the 2007 Beowulf, which immediately looked like Schindler's List next to the 1999 version that we also sampled. Laughed hysterically along with rest of class ... )

*~JOIN THE IMPACT!~* NYC protest was super-excellent. (We'll just ignore the part where I got lost on the way to City Hall and had to call David, who made fun of me. A lot.)

Pictures and briefish details. )

Quantum of Solace: pretty good. I wish I'd watched Casino Royale again beforehand, though. David is in love with Judi Dench. I am weirdly in love with Mathieu Almaric. Go figure.

SNL: HAAAA OMG WTF?! I already loved Paul Rudd, but now I kind of love Justin. A lot. My FB status is now "Rose is a dance biscuit."

Win: we went to Dangerbox tonight, which is an improv group that has members with which we are friends (...what?) and this male acappella group 'opened' for them--and they did the "Boy Meets World" song and "Flathead" by the Fratellis. \o/ I've decided I have to join a singing group next year; I miss it too much.

Another win: friggin' Ann Coulter is coming to speak at my school. At NYU. Tickets are $5; it's worth far, far, FAR more than that to me to watch her get eviscerated by pissed-off gay Tischies. I am SO THERE.

Still rather happy & smiley. It was great, great fun to be in NYC this week, with people honking and screaming and cheering out on the streets all night on Tuesday, and then wearing buttons and being cheerful for days afterwards. (And I'm saving my Washington Square News forevs.)

Now, back to the usual frivolity: a meme leading to discussion.

[info]fannish5: Five canon events that would cause you to leave a fandom (or at least think seriously about it).

1. If Jim and Pam break up on "The Office." I would be so furious that they fell into the same pattern as every other crappy show that I don't think I could take it. (See below.)
2. If they get rid of Callie on "Grey's Anatomy." It makes no sense at all. (See below.)
3. If they get rid of Sylar on "Heroes." I got into the show late and I'm still not a diehard superfan. He's my favorite part of getting rid of him would make me lose interest severely.
4. ...Pretty much nothing could ever make me drop "Lost," ever, but I would completely lose my mind and go on a rampage if one of my three favorites got offed: Sawyer, Sayid or Desmond.
5. I can't think of a fifth, so I'll name one that already happened: I dropped "Alias" in its final season because I was so pissed that they lied to us when they said Vaughn would be in the whole season and killed him off in the premiere. And then brought him back. AGAIN. Give me a break.

Further clarification/discussion of last night's Office. )

And now Grey's, but I haven't seen last night's ep yet, so don't tell me stuff. Very tl;dr. )

[/epic rant is epic]

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas tonight, paper-writing, laundry-doing and Role Models tomorrow night. And everyone else should go see Repo! because I said I'd help pimp it.

Nice docile entry to offset the emo-ness from the weekend! Usually this student lounge is loud and annoying, but someone brought in the Iron Man DVD and is playing it now. :) I almost forgot how good it was.

Meme:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 56.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next seven sentences in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

"Caves?" he said to McPherson.
He nodded. "A few of 'em."
"You check 'em?"
McPherson sighed and cupped a match against the wind to light a thin cigar. "She had two pairs of shoes, Marshal. Both found back in her room. How's she going to get what we just came through, cross over these rocks, and scale that cliff?"
-- Shutter Island, Dennis Lehane (quite a good read so far, and soon to be the latest Leo & Marty vehicle)

"Heroes" last night was quite fun. Sylar's my favorite and has been since day one, so I loved him teaming up with HRG and being all super-shady and clever. I think Crazy Mama P has some kind of powers of manipulation/persuasion, and she's messing with him with the mother thing and by making him do what she wants--i.e., next week. :D Sylar + Mr. Muggles = love.

And we're back! TV is life!

Heroes )

House )

SVU )

The Office )

Johnny's been very busy! The Mad Hatter, Alice, PotC 4? Awesome! I know everyone's semi-horrified about PotC 4, since the third one was ridonkulous, but come on, it was fun. I went in expected to be amused and entertained, and I was. (KEITH RICHARDS, FOR GOD'S SAKE!) He clearly has so much love for that character; it's so endearing. I'll be there opening day if they do fifteen more. And Mad Hatter--hee! I know there's some sort of explanation about mercury poisoning and insanity or whatever; you know he'll do his research and get all into it. I can't wait. ♥

The ClayMates are melting the fuck down over the world's most obvious obviousness. Hilarity ensues. Go and read; great LOLZ are to be had.

I am basically crushed over the bad reviews Miracle At St. Anna is getting--I thought it would be awesome. :( It was down to 19% today, although I see now it's popped back up to 27%--perhaps it'll have a reprieve. I'm seeing Towelhead tomorrow night away, but there's always the coveted second-best Saturday night spot. (Can you tell I FINALLY get paid tomorrow?)

And thus ends another post of well-mannered frivolity.

P.S.--NO, I am not watching "Grey's" because I missed the first half. Will watch soon! Don't spoil me plzthx.

This MuggleCast episode made me nuts--he just got into the advanced special screening of HBP by CHANCE?! Haven't I built up enough good movie-seeing...karma points to merit something like that?! I mean, OK, I'm not in Chicago, but you'd think I'd get hooked up or something. D: I would have FREAKED. OUT.

"House" broke my HEEEAART, you guys. Broke it into little OTPieces. I will never recover (I mean, you know, until next week). Hugh is KILLING me with the sadfaces and the bashful looking-downs and his eyes and...aaargh! Needs moar couples counseling!

1) I watched Ice Castles the other night purely for the LOLZ, and it did not disappoint. My main motivation was the IMDb quotes page for it, because it's the funniest thing I've ever, ever, ever read. You must click there, immediately. And it doesn't hurt that young!Robby Benson is a FOX. He actually taught at my school the other year and I missed it. I will never forgive myself.

2) I also watched The Counterfeiters last night, and that was very good. I especially liked August Diehl; he's got this weirdly hot anemic!German!Paul Bettany thing going on. I saw him in this weird movie with Adrien Brody a while ago; I really need to stop watching random cable channels at 2:00 AM.

3) I somehow took on a job cat-/house-sitting for a former high school teacher/friend for the next week and a half. I'm not sure how it happened, but they're cool people and I love cats. Problem is, we kind of forgot to discuss the monetary-payment part of things before they left, and now I have no idea. She did, however, invite me to take vegetables from the garden in the back, so, as [info]la_belle_ange put it, I'm "getting paid in tomaaaatooes!" Oh boy.

4) I got more (tuition) money than I thought I would from school because I had decent grades, which is really quite nice.

5) I'm pretty happy with the "Last Comic Standing" results, which I totally called because I'm awesome.

Not much else to report. Man, my life is scintillating.

I'm done "Queer As Folk"! Waagh!

You'll always be young and you'll always be beautiful! You're Brian Kinney, for fuck's sake! )

Work is better; the women I work with have stopped being weirdly bitchy and I've just decided I'm going to read when things get boring and that's that (mostly because the other girl was sewing a blouse on Monday when the boss was away), so it's helping. Other job is also good--but I'm going to disembowel the next person who sits down at a goddamn dirty table and then gives me that "WTF, THERE'S PLATES HERE!??" look. Just wait forty seconds for me to clean it!! Good lord! Or maybe--just maybe--sit down at one of the other five clean tables right next to you, eh? GOD.

...Incidentally, I didn't yet mention on here that I have a new little cousin-once-removed; the cousin whose wedding I attended last year just had a daughter named Lucy Bridget (Bridget is her sister), and I think she's rather adorable. ;)

[info]fannish5: Name 5 characters you didn't like at first, but eventually learned to love.

{1} Ginny Weasley - Harry Potter: Well, I can't say I love her now, but I like her more than I did; in the early books I found her really annoying and silly, but I like the strength she developed later. I mostly liked that she wasn't just Hermione 2.0; she helped make the distinction between Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny really sharp and well-done. And frankly, I'm amused that she's a little slutacious. "Ginevra's dress is far too low-cut!" Heh.

{2} Hunter - Queer As Folk: I thought he was a bitchy little snot at first, but I saw his sweet side over time. The stuff with the kids at school broke my heart, and I squealed with delight when he showed up at Michael's hospital room door in 5x11. ♥ Besides, he has cute freckles.

{3} Ben - Lost: I wasn't sure what to make of him at first; for a while I really believed he was some dippy parachutist, just because they're fond of the red herrings. And then I just thought he was sort of evil and manipulative and nutty, but then I realized how brilliant he was about it. Then he started pwning Locke every other minute, which cracked me up, and being snarky and quoting Of Mice and Men and stuff, and now I think he's completely mcawesome.

{4} Mark "McSteamy" Sloane - Grey's Anatomy: I figured he was just a wife-stealing cad at first, but then I realized how much he genuinely cared for Addie--and more than that, how much he cared for Derek (at one point he commented that he'd never had a family and said "Derek was my family" and I got all twirly) and how he was conflicted about the affair and upset about her abortion and everything. And he's also kind of hilarious and self-aware and hilarious in his whorishness, so I have to love him. He's also very sweet to patients (remember Donna, the MTF transsexual who had cancer and stuff?), which I like.

{5} Zach Van Gerbig - Gilmore Girls: I was still on the "DAVE'S GONE?! NOOOO!!!" train for months, so I thought trying to replace him with Zach as Lane's musical love interest was lame, but then I realized he was kind of awkwardly cute and really loved Lane, so he won me over. He's just such a guy's guy--"I don't say crap like 'special evening,' Lane! I play guitar!" :D And his Odd-Couple-y relationship with Brian charms the hell out me.

I can't believe I just watched the Daytime Emmys. And I can't believe that Tyra won. D: D: D:

New job good. Kind of boring, but less so. LIFE NOT IMPORTANT, ONLY TV IMPORTANT. Tl;dr. No, I am so serious.

Sex and the City this weekend with my stepmom. Don't spoil me plz.
EDIT: Forgot to add that I had a really freaky dream about The Happening earlier this week. Yes, that's right, I dream about movies that haven't come out yet. That's cinephilic devotion right there.
