Hmmph. I thought SVU was premiering last night. Apparently it's moved to Wednesdays. No one tells me these things. That means in conflicts with Glee, and I don't know, I think Glee is gonna win that one. The other has gotten very silly. I'll probably still download, but...eh. I've kinda lost interest in DH as well. And kinda Heroes. I'm losing my touch. (My mother's texting me that I need to watch Mercy, because apparently it's offensive. "YU MUST WATCH." Good grief.)

DAY SIX:
"Learn how to love art in yourselves, not yourselves in art. If you undertake to exploit art, it will betray you; art is very vindictive. I repeat: love art in yourselves, not yourselves in art--that should be your guiding thread. The theatre does not exist for you, you exist for the theatre." -- Constantin Stanislavski

I just finished reading this book of his writings and speeches; I have a lot of high-minded ideas about the integrity of art in all forms; I think the ego of the creator (writer, actor, director, whatever) should come second to the work itself. If you're going to create art, you should do it because you want it to exist and be out there in the world, not because you yourself want the attention. (If you can get joy out of it as well, that's pretty good. But that's not the only reason to do it.) [/pretentious]

[Two other, less famous quotes I loved from this past week:
- "So much hotness. I need to see this movie again. Alone. Pee Wee Herman style." -- [info]killervee, in reaction to an Inglourious Basterds cast picspam
- "This is why kids today are pansies. They didn't have terrifying movies with electro-shock therapy and screaming bodiless heads." -- inversed @ Snarkfest, on Return to Oz]

P.S.--My Halloween plans have changed, and I need ideas. Anything Disney. Thoughts?

Not a bad day. My French class was canceled and my short story was peer-reviewed in Creative Writing, and everyone said they really liked one of my characters and thought the whole thing was funny (which was sort of the point). Several people thought my unspecified narrator had a crush on the second character--I wrote them both as guys; I hadn't expected people to be slashing my fictional characters until at least 15 years from now when I'm rich and famous and published, but it's never too soon to start!

DAY FIVE:

I was planning to post a particularly funny interview with Johnny or one of my favorite trailers or something, but then I came across this video from 2005 in which Obama, amongst others, roasts Rahm Emanuel, whom I totally love, and it is EXCELLENT. The best quote, if you don't have time to watch (starts around 5:02): "It hasn't been easy for Rahm, though. As a young man he had a serious accident. I think many of you are aware of this--he was working at a deli, [and had an] accident with a meat-slicing machine and he lost part of his middle finger. As a result of this, this rendered him practically mute." HEEEEE.

Well, of course the Emmys pissed me off. Hugh and Steve are becoming Susan Luccis. GAH. But the Cheno won, which I reallyreally wanted but didn't necessarily expect, because no one appreciates PD, and her speech was completely adorable. She should be on TO! She can be Angela's sister! The one she hasn't talked to in 16 years or whatever! Come on, it's perfect, she's tiny and blond! And Michael Emerson was wonderful, as always. He absolutely deserved it. ♥ And "Lost" needs to SWEEP next year, LotR-style, or else. I spent the night AIM-chatting with the ONTD crowd, and it was, of course, priceless and shouty and faster than my brain processes language. But in a good way ("OK, THAT'S IT, I'M GOING TO PUNCH EVERYONE EVER").

DAY FOUR: The Movie Spoiler: totally addictive website that basically spoils/recaps movies, both recent and older. They're user-submitted, so some are better than others, but it's useful if you're only semi-interested in a movie, or if you're weird like me and like to read recaps of things you've seen (like I do on TWoP as well).

House 6x01 )

I didn't see TBBT or Heroes yet; I'm watching the premiere of the latter tomorrow and if it's not great, I think I'm just dropping it for good. Hotness can only carry it so long. The finale was just uber-fail and the scripts have gotten awful and...gah. ONE MORE CHANCE, SHOW.

Congratulations to go my girl [info]la_belle_ange: today she broke her previous record and saw Inglourious Basterds for an eighth time. Yes, that's right. I am very impressed. As my record is four times, I am slightly abashed and need to catch up. I'm thinking maybe Alice...? Not sure.

DAY THREE: Fanfic--Theories About Nuclear Winter by [info]hollycomb. It's a Calvin & Hobbes fic, specifically Calvin/Susie--I know, I had doubts too, but someone linked me on Snarkfest and it's wonderful. So heartfelt and imaginative; it totally captures their voices and the spirit of the whole comic and...everything. Love it. (Also, there's going to be a C&H documentary?! Yay!)

Othello was good. It was a very modern interpretation--the set was really sparse and everyone was getting updates on the war on their BlackBerries, heh. Bianca and Montano were combined into one character, played by a woman, which really made it interesting. Now I'm thinking I might want to see Hamlet with Jude Law.

Also saw Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs last night, which was ridiculously cute. Bill Hader is adorable in all forms. The back two rows of adults (including David & myself) were laughing as uproariously as the kids down in front--there was lots of subtler humor for the adults, and it was just generally delightful. (In fact, I am now eating spaghetti and meatballs for dinner as a result. Chef Boyardee, but still.) Sony, coming out of nowhere with their new animation! Impressive! It was in 3D, of course, meaning we paid $16.50 each, which is the most I've ever paid for a movie, but we reasoned that we saw The Informant! for free, and it comes out to $8.25 per movie and that's actually not bad.

DAY TWO:

Photo taken by me atop the cliffs at Tintagel Castle, which is in a little village on the coast near Cornwall. It took forever to get out there from where we were staying in Cornwall, and then we climbed up these slippery stone steps, and there was kinda no railing or anything, and it was quite nerve-wracking and adventurous. I don't like heights, but I climbed up as high as I could go anyway, and I'm glad I did. ;)

DAY ONE: Use Somebody - Paramore (Kings of Leon cover). Great song, great cover--I really love her voice. I was disinclined to like them because they're all Twilight-y, but once again, I've given in. (Incidentally: the latest New Moon trailer? Uh, wow. It looks like a legit movie this time. I will never stop being a lolfan, but at least there are, like, actual special effects and costumes and sets/locations and stuff this time. Shoot. I've already made plans to see it with a friend opening weekend. I am still wearing my "Support Cedric Diggory" t-shirt. You have to commit to these things.)

she's a hurricane in all kinds of weather
Today was an epic fail. I went to work and had a massive, staggering allergy attack, and I also had to stand in a ridiculously overheated corner of the restaurant behind the counter to answer the phones with the result that by noon I actually thought I was going to pass out. Even the customers were like "dude, go home." One of the other waitresses force-fed me a ton of orange juice, and I staggered home and took Benadryl and fell into bed around 1:45, and didn't get up until after 5:00. :P Thank God I have off tomorrow, because I totes think I would die if I had to go in. I've never called out or left early before, ever, so I know they're not mad, but it was a bit embarrassing.

I broke down and bought a new iPod off of eBay last week (so much for waiting and saving up, ho ho), and it came today, and once I dragged myself back out of bed I loaded all my crap back onto it, and it looks pretty good. It's a 120GB and it's sort of black-silverish, and the display is really fancy and I dig it.

I also wrote an e-mail in response to an editorial in the paper (I KNOW, MY GOD, DO I DO ANYTHING ELSE EVER) because I was annoyed at a Watchmen DVD review--it basically said "the DVD sucks because the movie sucks and it's even LONGER, and the movie sucks because The Comedian beats up Silk Spectre." I wrote this semi-prissy e-mail about how violence can be used to prove a point and how the characters' lives are meant to point out how combining hypersexuality with vigilante violence is a bad thing and how the film was really geared towards fans of the novel and is meant to be shocking, etc., and the guy actually wrote back and said I had a point. (I then had a similar but unrelated conversation with my mother, for the thousandth time, and I said "just because it's got a bit of the old tolchocking doesn't mean it's not worth a good viddy, little sister!" She was less than convinced.) That was kinda fun. And I watched the Director's Cut with my dad; I really like that they put the Hollis Mason stuff back in, since I love Dan and it helps expand his character (and we fast-forwarded through the sex scene, because, come on). And now I have the 'digital copy' on my new iPod, yay.

And a meme, stolen from [info]sexyjohnlennon:

Still not doing too well in the job department. My old pizza place offered me Saturdays, which isn't bad, but it's still not a lot. I admit I'm enjoying sleeping in and watching movies (and possibly having a standing date with [info]scimmia_romanov for the $6 Wednesdays at the Ritz downtown), but making money would be nice too. :P

The good news, however, is that I am upgrading my phone (for free!) and my new one is the bomb diggity. I should have it tomorrow or Monday; it's been shipped to my dad's work and then I have to go into the store to have my numbers transferred and stuff. Holler!

New moodtheme as well. ♥ And my extra userpics is running out quite soon; maybe this will be the year I have the willpower to not renew it. (But I doubt it.)

And a meme, stolen from lots of people:
Name your 10 absolute favorite couples (het/slash/canon/fanon) and ask people to see what trends they notice about your couples. Try to pick different fandoms.

1. Sirius/Remus (Harry Potter)
2. Matt/Elektra (Marvel comics)
3. Brian/Justin ("Queer As Folk" US)
4. Jim/Pam ("The Office" US)
5. Sylar/Mohinder ("Heroes")
6. Des/Penny ("Lost")
7. House/Wilson ("House")
8. Luke/Lorelai ("Gilmore Girls" - S1-5 only)
9. Ned/Chuck ("Pushing Daisies")
10. Tulio/Miguel (The Road to El Dorado)

Boo, way too much canon. :( And maybe they're not my absolute favorites, but they're close.

You Would Win Best Original Screenplay

You are insightful and expressive. You've always been a natural storyteller.

You know how to hook an audience, entertain them, and surprise them at the end.

Where people see everyday life, you see an engaging plot with interesting characters.

You notice details that other people ignore. People you've only met once or twice live inside your head.

Just thought that'd be a fun way to start. Oscar thoughts! )

I continue to dig this town. It's really accessible; the tube is so easy to follow and use. (Although I did get squashed in the doors as I attempted to leap onto a train today...er...never mind.) I saw Che: Part One tonight, which was pretty good. I am very confused as to why it was shut out entirely of the Oscars this year--you'd think they'd throw it something. (Part Two comes out here in three weeks.)

[info]falulatonks gave me K:
1. Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon (one of my favorite corny lighter-power-ballads)
2. Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Eric Clapton (I remember listening to this when I was really, really little and not understanding it, but just knowing it was incredibly sad...I think I probably heard Dylan's version, but I like Clapton better, tbqh)
3. Kiss - Prince (this one always makes me think of Pretty Woman, since that's what she sings in the bathtub)
4. King Of New York - Newsies (I only just saw this last year, entirely because of ONTDK party .gifs, and it is SO EXCELLENT)
5. Keep Ya Head Up - Tupac (yeah, that's right, this nerdy white girl likes 'Pac. I am full of surprises)

"Caves?" he said to McPherson.
He nodded. "A few of 'em."
"You check 'em?"
McPherson sighed and cupped a match against the wind to light a thin cigar. "She had two pairs of shoes, Marshal. Both found back in her room. How's she going to get what we just came through, cross over these rocks, and scale that cliff?"
-- Shutter Island, Dennis Lehane (quite a good read so far, and soon to be the latest Leo & Marty vehicle)

"Heroes" last night was quite fun. Sylar's my favorite and has been since day one, so I loved him teaming up with HRG and being all super-shady and clever. I think Crazy Mama P has some kind of powers of manipulation/persuasion, and she's messing with him with the mother thing and by making him do what she wants--i.e., next week. :D Sylar + Mr. Muggles = love.

Aargh. Computer problems, yet again. It appears to be something either with the inverter or the backlight, and possibly related to the fact that I had it plugged in during a lightning storm. >_____> It's looking as though I may have to get a new one and just have all my shit transferred, because really, at this point, it's just not worth it to keep having it fixed; it's costing more than the thing's worth. :P

Life is good aside from that, though--went to my third viewing of The Dark Knight last night with [info]la_belle_ange and the honorary brother, which was of course hilarious. (I didn't think he was worthy because he hasn't seen Batman Begins and kept going "but I saw the other one! Adam West, right?" But I gave in.) I'd see it five more times--it just keeps being awesome. Working and watching movies is basically all I'm doing these days. And it's not bad, really. I'm also finally watch S5 of "Queer As Folk" (I've been putting it off because I don't want it to end D:) and reading quite a lot, which is also nice. I'm working on a Capote novel now, and I'm thinking about reading The Satanic Verses next. And I've been meaning to catch up on this show, too *points* because I love these crazy folks. Well, shit. Out of nowhere the other day I realized that I've actually been in the house from the "I Want Love" music video and the ending scenes of There Will Be Blood two years ago when I visited CA. 3. Brave - Idina Menzel (she & Taye need to have hot bbs now plzthx)
4. Blood on the Dance Floor - Michael Jackson (I know someone who theorized that this song was about AIDS. It actually kind of makes sense.)
5. Buckbeak's Flight - HP/PoA (probably my favorite HP musical cue from all five films so far. GORGEOUS.)

Uhh. So I'm already not very good at this studying thing, and it's not even exam week yet. I have a Spanish test Friday & I really should be studying since tomorrow is Magical Thursday and I'll be watching TV all night, but I only managed twenty minutes before I got bored. :P At least I outlined the essays I want to write for my Literary Interpretation take-home exam due Monday--the extra-credit piece is comparing a super old-school poem and a punk song. Extremely stressed. Next week I have to register for both housing and classes, and I am super-fucked in both mediums: juniors always get screwed for housing, and I'm going to be really, really upset if I have to live, like, a hundred miles from campus. I get a decent pick for classes, but I'm not sure what I have to take in the fall because I'm not sure what I can take in the spring when I go to London. And don't get me started on the math class they sprung on me. David and I really wanted to have that class together, but he's a psych/history major and has to take something totally different. FUUUCCKK.

I'm missing Spanish tomorrow to take the language placement test, though--I already basically sprechen the français; hopefully I can get out of the rest of the language requirement for the College of Arts and Sciences. I'm actually looking forward to being immersed in French for an hour; that's how badly I miss it. I gave myself a crash-course in relative pronouns and stuff today at work (thanks, About.com); I actually feel mildly confident about it. Sort of.

At least the weekend was fun. [info]la_belle_ange came and we watched movies and drank too much wine and caused some minor mayhem. (And she gave me several totally awesome t-shirts as a gift, I might add). :) BFFs make life sweeter.

Because I have been a wretched lazy ho and I'll never get a Rolling Stone column being that way, here's a shortish review:

winner winner, chicken dinner )

Jeebus, that took forever. I'm losing my touch. Or maybe I'm just stressed--I went to an annoyingly pointless meeting today about classes and things that I need to take next year; it was totally non-specific and I'm just going to have to have a one-on-one meeting sometime next week so they can spell it out for me, as I'm a tad simple. (I have to take British Literature, though, which jives rather well with my London-going plans, eh?) But I have to take a test to place out of taking FOUR SEMESTERS of a language; I really wasn't planning on taking much more Spanish, and I already speak damn French. And I may take this math test to see if I get out of this other class, which they TOTALLY did not tell me I had to take (several people in the room were like "OMG WTF" and I was all "I KNOW RIGHT" and it was very stressful). Ugh. It's only March, for god's sake!

What is with every sitcom doing the 'former friend/flame coming back as the opposite gender' plotline? ...Well, not every, but "Just Shoot Me" and now "Two and a Half Men." It's fun, but old. ...And all I can think is "Hey, Tranny! It's Tranny." I'm so tired. I'll go away now.

Seeing 10,000 B.C. tomorrow night with [info]joie_de_vivre. Yesterday it had an 80-something percent on RT, and now it has a...twelve. *kicks carpet* Does no one appreciate corny awesomeness/CGI badassery anymore?! Goddamn.

Wow, I got nothing done this weekend. I was planning to write either fic (I know, I know) or a review of The Other Boleyn Girl, which I saw on Friday and didn't hate, unlike everyone else in the world, apparently. But I just wasn't feeling inspired. And then on Saturday I had a huge allergy attack and ended up just lying in bed watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Sweeney Todd stage show from 1982 with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury. (I'm just going to be a bad theatre fangirl and say it: it was rubbish compared to the movie. I know, they're two different mediums and Johnny's super-restrained expression-driven performance totally wouldn't have worked onstage, but my god. Al Pacino in The Devil's Advocate called and said "whoa, take it down a notch, partner." Hearn was just shouty all the way through to the point of absurd comedy--in the final scene he was literally shaking her and bellowing "LUCY!", causing me to shake an imaginary plastic bag and go "FISHIE! WHY ARE YOU SLEEPING?" At least Angela was awesomely psycho and stuff, but everyone else was annoying. Toby couldn't sing or act. And the blood was PATHETIC. Fangirl is displeased.)

And then today my mom came to town, so we just hung around and ate and did a bit of shopping, and then I came home and fiddled around online and watched TV and stuff. Oh well. Maybe will write something tomorrow. For now, I'll just...do this meme again:

Rules:
1. Pick 15 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie. Just don't look at comments, kiddies.
ETA: Fine, I'm screenin'!
5. NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search functions. I mean, I guess you could, but where's the fun in that? Try to guess on your own at least first.

and here we go! )

P.S., I totally loved Ellen on SNL. "Mama, I think he's tryin' to seminate that I'm fat or summin'!" Hee!
