extraordinary machine.: Film - A Single Manla_petite_singe on January 2nd, 2012 05:50 pm (UTC)
But of course! :D I was trying to think of good scenes from movies, like, involving movies...and there ya go.
eye never sleep: Single mantwilightthief on January 2nd, 2012 05:52 pm (UTC)
Thats one of my fav scenes. That and the Ansel Adams, black and white part when Jim and George are by the beach.

Youre making me want to watch it again ;)
Lily: Kai/Gerdalilypeters on February 12th, 2012 12:15 pm (UTC)
I liked Wuthering Heights up until the second half. :/ It didn't work as well.

I just...wasn't particularly impressed by the acting all round. That's pretty demanding dialogue, and not everyone can pull it off, I guess. I think Andrea Arnold said the first half was more "her," and I'm like 'well, yeah, that's why it's better.' I wasn't as annoyed as I thought I'd be about where they cut it off, though.
Lily: Patricklilypeters on February 14th, 2012 01:02 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that's pretty much how I felt; Heathcliff should be a force of nature & I didn't get that impression from this version. :/ Maybe I was spoiled by Ralph's interpretation of the character.

I totally didn't expect you to like Chronicle so much! That's awesome. :)
extraordinary machine.: Film - Ghost Worldla_petite_singe on February 12th, 2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
(Good Lord, I've seen the 21 Jump Street trailer so many damn times that I heard that in Jonah Hill's voice. "When did I get stabbed? THAT'S AWESOME!") I didn't know if I would either, but it was great! Shit got so incredibly real at the end & I was just flailing everyone. Dunno if it's gonna make the top ten list or anything, but for a low-budget February release...awesome.
Jessjessm on March 16th, 2012 03:21 am (UTC)
How do you do the things you do? The Cleveland International Film Festival is coming up, and I spotted Headhunters in the festival guide. I had a feeling I saw that title on this list of yours. Lo and behold, there it is!
extraordinary machine.: TV - Game of Thrones - Jaimela_petite_singe on March 16th, 2012 03:50 am (UTC)
Hee! I cannot take any sort of credit for that one; that was from a certain lovely comm where certain lovely people upload things. I snagged it for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and he's awesome in it, though the subtitles I had were really dodgy, and in the second half it does a few things that I just...I pretty much never turn movies off in the middle, but that was a close one. Even though it was good. I shan't spoil, but...GAHHHH.

I just realized (as I'm taking yet another awkward-induced break in the middle of Fish Tank) I'm like 40 movies off pace for 250. D:

Do you have any in-depth thoughts on Your Sister's Sister? I saw it this weekend, and I loved the holy freaking crap out of it. I'm still trying to pinpoint why!

Well, I really loved the dialogue--that improv-heavy, naturalized conversation style is my absolute fave, and there was a Q&A with the director afterwards and she also said that the actors were really involved with the development of their characters, which is also my fave. However, I did facepalm pretty hard when I realized we were headed for yet another lesbian-sleeps-with-a-man story, and I found it inescapably problematic that she did it--and punctured the freaking condom!--because she was so ~desperate to get pregnant. Is that even legal?? Now, one thing I did notice in retrospect was that she never called herself a lesbian; the other two did and she didn't object, but she never said that, and she implied she'd been with men before. I've also heard the director make comments about sexual fluidity and stuff, and I am totally HFT always in movies. But I thought a line or two of dialogue about that could've helped. And I'm also super into OT3s and threeway parenting and stuff, so despite the extremely dubious circumstances, I found myself really actually kinda hoping that she was pregnant at the end, and I liked that it ended in an open-ended way. And I did love the individual relationships (the sisters, Emily/Mark [I forget their names], etc). So, yeah, really not sure about some of the details of the story, but really really liked the style and the performances.

Have you ever awarded a movie with five stars? If so, which one(s)?

You know, that's a good question. Not often, certainly. I guess I only give five stars if I truly have no quibbles or even teeny little complaints, and that's rare because I am a nitpicker. But maybe I should reconsider some of these. I guess once I start working on my top ten list...

I look forward to your top ten every year! I was snooping through your yearly movie lists and didn't see a five-star rating, which is why I prompted the question. I'll continue to snoop. I give five stars to some really dumb movies, but I don't allow myself to change the rating after one week, sooooo.

I hope you don't mind that I ask you this... Tomorrow, I'm taking a half-day off to see movies. (I have less than a month to use my Personal Time!) I'm seeing The Other Son, plus one other movie. Which film do you recommend: Holy Motors, Anna Karenina, The Sessions, or A Royal Affair? (You've seen all but the last one, if I'm not mistaken.)

Also, what did you think of Life of Pi?

I have a bad habit of going back & changing my ratings once I've thought about a film a little bit, meaning that this page and my Tumblr table often don't match because I change one and forget to do the other...you get it. But yeah, no, I should definitely be nicer and give a few five stars here & there; it's a bit hipster to never do it. I'm still not at all sure about my #1 of the year, though. I was kinda hoping it'd be Rust and Bone, and I really really liked that, but IDK about #1. Maybe Zero Dark Thirty will pull it off? Anyway.

Hee, amusingly I was planning to watch A Royal Affair this very evening, so I'll get back to you on that one. I still have mixed feelings about Holy Motors, but it's probably the most original film I've seen all year, so I have to recommend it for that. The Sessions is worth it for the performances, even if the story isn't perfect (interesting, but the end peters out a bit, imo). And...depends how you feel about the book of AK. I both liked it & was exasperated by it, and the movie really kinda captures the ridiculousness of it all and totally owns the over-the-topness, but it's not perfect. It's hard to know how you're supposed to feel about these people. Worth seeing, though. Matthew Macfayden is particularly delightful. So, there, my entirely unhelpful recommendations. :D
